camp arrowhead

The girls went to Camp Arrowhead yesterday. They did an archeology class in the morning and learned how to grid a dig. They learned how archeologists put things back together. They broke pots to learn how to do that.

Then they took archery and atlatls in the afternoon. Soren did great and her team won the atlatl game.

Hello parents,

We had a nice day today.

We started with clapping and a singing marching game as we waited for everyone to arrive. We did our opening and singing, then got right into painting spring scenes.

We came back and did more hand clapping and marching games, then settled in to crochet.

Snack time found us solving mystery stories. Then we played a bit of recorder before we heard the next piece of our Old Testament stories-- the story of Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Esau, featuring the origin of "Jacob's Ladder." We did a bit of beeswax modelling then headed out into the sunshine to jump rope. It's nice to get back to all of our old activities.

Have a good week,
Lynn

Dear Parents and Friends,

It was a lively day for the Maples. We really missed Sue and Cathleen, but we're so graeful that our friend Betsy Peacock could join us for the afternoon.

We remembered Spring's arrival with a poem or two and by inviting lots of birds to fly in and out of our windows. We reviewed the story told weeks ago called"The Country at the Bottom of the Well" and talked about making it into our play. The children volunteered for the many roles and had lots of ideas for staging it. With Betsy, we did bean-bag counting, passing and then some walking and counting exercises, accompanied by lots of laughter. We were hungry! We ate our snack and shared stories and riddles and went outside for a " noticing" walk and an energetic game of tag. Inside, we settled for a solid 1/2 hour of handwork with Melissa and at the end of the afternoon, Betsy led us in some challenging and delightful form drawing exercises. Then we dashed outside into the welcome warmth!

Best wishes to all.

PS If you find a Smart Wool sock among your child's belongings, it's mine.

Dear Parents and Friends,

We started our class this week with water color painting: a wash of yellow, additions of blue until the green of shamrocks and leprechauns appeared. The children were attentive and delighted. Everyone helped with clean-up. We appreciate the wonderful assistance of Ben's mom, Bonnie and Grant's dad, Bob.

During our circle time, we practiced our "round" singing and listened to stories from the life of St. Francis. We did a clapping game and did bean-bag passing with an increasingly challenging rhythm . Then it was snack time which included jokes, a leprechaun story
and lots of tales of finding 4 leaf-clovers! We did work at our knitting for a few minutes, with Melissa's patient guidance and sang familiar songs: "Way up in Canada" and "My Aunt Came Back" then we celebrated Grant's summer birthday, with strawberries dipped in chocolate! Mmmmm! There was time for a quick goodbye. Thanks to all who helped with clean-up! We dashed outside into the windy afternoon.

Next Tuesday, March 21,: There is an Equinox celebration for the whole school , starting at 3PM. Please join us with your family! Maples will meet as usual at 1PM and will follow a shortened class schedule.

Warmly,
Anne, Sue, Cathleen

lcg 3/14 and more

Hi all,

Sorry for the late note-- we've been having internet troubles. I spoke to some nice boys in India and now we're back on track.

We had a lovely day yesterday! It felt great to be back in our regular rhythm.

We began with writing cursive in notebooks, copying spring poems. Then we did our opening verse and sang some songs in rounds. That was lovely and fun.

Then we did the old bean bag passing-- this time to the 7s and 8s times tables. Hope this is some help at home when multiplication tables come up.

We did two form drawings-- similar pictures, but one with curved lines and one with straight. We used our bodies to feel the difference between curved and straight. We also got back to recorder and reviewed some old songs and began a new lullaby.

I taught some of the children a new clapping game, from my childhood, then we moved into a nice long crocheting time with Melissa. Be sure the children bring their crocheting (and recorders) each week.

At snack we celebrated Emma Milligan's 10th birthday with a song and birthday wishes.

We did a quick marching song, then sat down to hear the story of Abraham and Sarah.

We finished with some heart thumping jump roping (right in class). It felt good to get back to that too.

Next week is the spring equinox festival from 3-5PM. We'll have regular class and end early. Let me know if you did not get a flyer with the details.

Hope you have a peaceful week,
Lynn

Soren is starting writing group with Sharon Miller with Emma's group. She's there now. Hope it's going well!

Emma was in a play - Noah and the Flood, and was the archangel Michael and also somebody's wife. She did great! Great intonation, volume and a lot of hard lines to memorize! I couldn't have done it, that's for sure. Oboe and violin continue well for both of them.

Hello parents,

I'm sure you are as proud of our Evergreens as I am! On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate them at least an 11.

When I picked this play, I honestly worried that it was too long, with many people having more than one role, and many lines to learn. Well, of course I was wrong!

So-- thank you all-- it was a wonderful, wonderful performance.

Not much to report today--

We had snack, celebrated Emma Kilmer's birthday, and played a fun blindfold game lots and lots of times.

FRIDAY NIGHT--
Performance starts at 7PM. Please invite family and friends! Children should arrive at 6:30 to get in costumes-- we'll meet downstairs in the lounge (next to Lynne Kliman's room). Please try to stay for the HickSequoi performance. Both plays should run about an hour total. Then we'll have refreshments.

COME ABOARD! Younger siblings and friends are invited to be animals in the Friday performance. Would three people be willing to sit up front and help cue the "animals" when it's time to go up on stage? Let me know.

NEXT WEEK
It's back to class as usual. I think we're all ready for that. Please be sure children have their crocheting, recorders and a mug for snack.

Till Friday,
Lynn

Soren did a bunch of great mult. stuff last week. She did the hundreds board, and a mult. chart of 1 to 10 and drilled a bunch of numbers.

Hi parents,

Today was a great day, with two fine rehearsals. We are in good shape for our plays next week.

The children should listen to their CDs a few times this week to review. Most are fine with their lines. A few need to speak more loudly.

After rehearsal we had a delicious ice-cold snack to celebrate Nat's half-birthday. Then we had a "game-a-thon"-- playing lots of old favorites. It will be good to get back to our regular routine after the play.

NEXT WEEK--

The children should be set with their costumes and props-- everything (except Nat's saw and Molly's hammer) is at the church. Please have the children wear light clothes next week-- it gets fairly warm on stage. Also have them wear colors that don't clash with their costumes-- white and lighter colors should be fine. Girls could also wear tights.

We will perform Tuesday at 1:30. Please arrive by 1:00 so the children can get dressed.

Friday night they should arrive at 6:30. Plays will start at 7PM. Can someone volunteer to watch over the refreshment table Friday night? Also, please try to stay for the other class play and support their hard work. Each play will run about 25-30 minutes.

Catherine Burke has volunteered to help backstage Tuesday afternoon. Can someone else help on Friday night? Mostly we could use someone to help tie angel wings and help keep kids (and the "animals") quiet.

Thanks-- I'm looking forward to next week!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,
Lynn

Dear Parents and Friends:

A quick review of our lively and full afternoon this week: We made a "human machine" with each one of us becoming a part with motions and sounds . We decided that we were probably making ice cream! We listened to a poem titled "What Do we Plant When we Plant a Tree" and heard of lots of possibilities, and then each added more rhymes, more possibilities. We sang "White Coral Bells" and listened to an ancient Jataka tale ,"The Rumor." about someone who thinks she hears something. We practiced finding the four directions and walked through the poem "Four Strong Walls" . By then we were all very hungry, so we had a laughing, sharing snack time and settled comfortably with our knitting with Melissa. After a wavy, curvy form drawing, we sang a favorite song "Rattlin ' Bog," played "The Big Wind Blows" and off we went to play outside. We missed Cathleen, and will be glad she's back next week.

Next week, March 7, two other LCG classes will present plays, starting at 1:30. Please join us if you can.
