The ride home

Emma worked on her 3rd grade workbook on the way home and did two crossword puzzles. You have to read text and then remember what was in it to get the answers to the puzzles. One was on Greenland and the other one was on Canada. She did a great job all by herself!

Soren colored in hers quite a bit but then got a bit carsick so that was the end of that.

They went fishing this weekend and Soren caught 4 fish. I'll let David tell about their interest in the guttin of fish ;).

Emma's Epiphany

On the ride to PA, I taught Emma how to subtract in columns and borrow from the Tens. she got it right away! Soren learned how to do some simple subtraction without the hundreds chart, using apples, although she can subtract double digit numbers using the hundreds chart.

I am anxious to get the rest of the Miquon books so we can start using the Cuisenaire rods to really get S. to understand units, tens, etc.

On to the epiphany! As we were talking about math, Soren insisted something was "second grade level" and I gave a little philosophical speech about how, now that we're homeschooling, we aren't going to use "grade levels," which are arbitrary in nature anyway, and that we will just learn whatever we're ready to learn, regardless of what "level" it may be. I went on to talk about how unnatural I believe it is to learn in a classroom full of other 5 or 8 year olds and how it was so much better to learn from life, and to be mixed up with people of all ages.

I could literally see the lightbulb go on over Emma's head, just like in the cartoons!

She said, "I really love that idea! All schools should be like that!" I told her that i know of one that is similar.

All three of us then had a fascinating discussion about what learning is, and what forms it can take. We came up with learning about physics (levers and pendulums) from doing gymnastics and how our bodies moved. Soren wants to learn more about how paper is made. Emma wants to learn more about pollution (Note to self: I have a great book about this for kids). We talked about how it's not all book learning - we can learn about who we are inside, and who we want to be, and what kind of friend we are or what to be, etc. The kids were so into it!

Emma also spent a good bit of the day in the car reading her Redwall book - at least an hour. It was a good and productive trip!

TGIF

Today the kids have mostly read - Emma is reading Book 2 of the Redwall series, which I can't remember the name of. Soren is working on the 3rd grade CD again and now they're doing their 1/2 hour clean sweep, finishing up their room and putting away the rest of their laundry. I gave Emma some tips on organzing the clothes into piles for each drawer so she didn't have to keep opening and closing multiple drawers to put things away.

When they're done, they can do whatever they want! Our neighbor, Lena, is coming to watch the girls while I go to yoga and my massage appointment. It will be interesting to see what they come up with, since it's icky and raining outside!

We're headed to PA this afternoon and the girls are excited about going fishing with their grandfather this weekend. That's always a learning experience! I'll leave it to David to post about the weekend :)

Management skills whooo boy

We did our 1/2 hour clean sweep and I made them a list, since Soren couldn't remember more than one thing at a time.

It went pretty well. We talked afterwards about what the experience was like and made a couple of suggestions for tomorrow.

Emma had a lot of complaints about Soren, so some of our ideas were:

1. separate lists for each person, so they can focus on their own work.

2. Don't rush - do the work well, and if everything doesn't get done, that's OK, because there's tomorrow.

3. Soren needs to wait to rest until after the 1/2 hour is up, or I will tack on extra time to her clean sweep ;).

I got a lot done while they were cleaning too, yay me!

We're having lunch, and then going swimming!

Day One

This is our first official day of homeschooling, although I feel that we have homeschooled since birth with the girls. It's just that we had a blip in our history during my single parenting years, and had to rely on outschooling for some structure and help.

Now we're back on track, and starting today, we're "official" homeschoolers again.

Soren just graduated from Kindergarten yesterday, and Emma from 2nd grade.

I'd like to have some structure to our days - not to recreate a school day, but just to avoid complete chaos.

I feel like we started out pretty well already today. I got up at 7:30 a.m. and got breakfast and checked my email.

Soren got up around 8 a.m. and had breakfast and has spent about an hour doing a math educational CD at the 3rd grade level. Now she is working on a first grade educational Reader Rabbit CD.

Emma is lazing around her first day of summer vacation.

At 10:30 a.m., we are going to speed clean for 1/2 hour and then get our PE in by going to the pool for a while. Then we have gymnastics for 3 hours tonight while I work.

We'll see what else educational and fun happens today!
