Hear Ye Hear Ye!
We're starting a unit on medieval times to coincide with Emma's class at Camp Arrowhead, and also because she is WAY into reading fiction about dragons, knights, Merlin, magic and King Arthur.
I got this great book and we read a couple of chapters today. We imagined what it would be like 1000+ years ago, and what in our house wouldn't exist. We imagined what life would be like w/o clocks, but how it would be to measure time with the seasons, the crow of the rooster, the sun and moon, and maybe an hourglass.
Then we drew maps (sneaky me, tying this in with our geography unit!). Emma did the first floor and backyard and Soren did the second floor and backyard. Emma made a very detailed compass rose, as well! Pretty good for someone who insists they don't understand maps and hate them ;).
Then we read about castles and nobility and knights and the Code of Chivalry. I made them write one together (hahaha) and Emma ended up writing some crap about needing allowances to promote peace in the house
It says "We will respect our parents room and we will respect our brothers space too if he will respect our space. We will be nice if evrybody else is nice and we will have fun if everybody else has fun. Signed Soren and Emma" Cute :)
We also went to the library this morning. Emma got an Artemis Fowl book (which I have already stolen) and a book about Merlin that she had not finished over the summer. She got out a book about dragons or something too. I can't remember.
Soren got out a whole bunch of Junie B. Jones books. I got them a book about the Endurance too, since we watched a movie about the Antarctica exploration last month. It has really cool cutouts of the ship and information about the expedition.
A very good day! I even got two loads of laundry done. Emma's down at Amy's now, watching Moses for an hour and then we have to head to the gym.
We also played 1/2 hour of our neverending game of Monopoly. I think I'm winning now ;).
