IHIPs and more

well, I sent the girls' IHIPs off to the school district this morning. Hopefully they are adequate! If anyone is interested in what they look like, feel free to ask and I'll send you a copy.

This morning I had them work on language arts. I realize now that I will need to give Soren more supervision and explicit direction, as she did a good job given the information I gave her, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

I started pulling spelling words out of their writings that we can learn each week.
Emma had 15 words to write out 3x, then had to write a story with them. Tomorrow Emma and I will edit her story and fix any mistakes and talk about grammar. I think conjunctions will be the theme this week. She got very frustrated with the *idea* of writing a story using the words, so when I backed off and had her write just sentences she was able to do that easily. Funny thing was, it still ended up being a story about the beach! She thought that was cool - it was the idea that was overwhelming, not the actual exercise.

Soren had 10 words and had to write sentences. She needs help organizing her work and taking her time (i.e. closer supervision from me!) so she doesn't rush through it. she's just so excited!

Then I had them each do two exercises in their printing books, and Emma had to do 2 in her cursive book.

Soren had to do two comprehension exercises in her story book (short story, and then it asks 4 questions about the story). She did well except when they changed how they were asking the questions - she obviously neglected to read the instructions, but when I went over it with her she fixed it right away. She has the same tendency I do - to make the question harder than it is. I can understand why - sometimes the questions are so stupid and obvious, one can't imagine that that's *really* what they're looking for ;).

School doesn't technically start till the 9th here, so we're ahead of the game. After lunch we're going to the library and then the grocery store. I think tonight I will go over their work and pull out what they need to work on more from it, and then I'll make a plan for tomorrow. It might be good for me to have a weekly plan right now with the new baby on the way, so I can sit in bed and supervise ;). That's why I want to get to the library today, before it's too late!

I would like to start with math tomorrow, to do something different everyday, unless they have something specific they want to work on.
