Creative Writing

I forgot something. While they were here for the arts festival, the girls came to a fiction reading I did for Wordstock (a sort of side project to the festival). The main character in my story had Parkinson's disease, so we got to talk about what Parkinson's was and how it affects the people who have it.

I also attended a poetry slam, and Emma was interested in how the competition worked (how the scores were calculated and how the rounds worked). When I told her what the prizes were ($50, $75, and $100), Emma said, "Hey! They counted by twenty-fives!" I'm starting to wonder what's *not* and educational opportunity! (But that's the beauty of HS, isn't it?)

They also got to visit the "spontaneous poetry booth" where I was working. The person making a donation gives the poet some words (and a dollar) and the poet writes them a poem based on the words. Emma made up her own poem based on the words "carefully" and "repeatedly." I can't recall the poem exactly, but it had to do with bonking one's sibling on the head with a pan.

I love that they're so interested in words and storytelling. And it was so neat to see them read poems to an audience on kid's day!
